Simple, Silly(?) Tip for Controlling Your Food by Joan Kent, PhD

Change your plate color!

This tip works in two ways.

  • A plate that’s the same color as your food encourages you to eat more food. Since a meal includes foods of different colors, control your portions by thinking of which foods you’d like to limit. To limit a side dish that’s white – potatoes, pasta, white rice, for example – don’t use a white plate.
  • Get the Blues. Eating from a blue plate seems to make us eat less. One theory is that blue is “off-putting.”  Does this match up with Part 1 above because there’s no blue food? (After all, blueberries are purple.) Blue plates may give us control without trying.

Bottom Line

If we want to eat lots of vegetables, we should use green plates!
