Polycystic Ovary Syndrome & Insulin:  A Very Brief Post

by Joan Kent, PhD

Recently, someone asked if I think eating to reverse PCOS will be as important in the next few years as it is today.

Unless some major changes happen, I think it will actually be more important.

3 main reasons for this:

  • The obesity epidemic is likely to lead to more women with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance underlies PCOS.
  • What we eat matters, too. Insulin resistance isn’t just the result of overweight. Without major changes, the American diet is likely to lead to more women with insulin resistance.
  • Regarding insulin dysfunction, it doesn’t matter which comes first — obesity, bad diet, bad genetics (re insulin or PCOS). The metabolic consequences are the same.

So PCOS is likely to become more common. The next post will cover a few facts about PCOS and 3 tips women with PCOS need to know regarding eating to reverse it.
