Nutrition Mistake #3: Health Comes from Weight Loss by Joan Kent, PhD
“Food, like your money, should be working for you.” – Charushila Biswas
It can be a mistake to think that changes in health require weight loss.
Yes, losing weight can and does lower blood pressure, reduce diabetic symptoms, balance cholesterol, and a lot more.
But those same health changes can actually occur even before the weight loss. Or at the very least even when there’s a long way to go in the weight-loss process.
Related to this mistake is the misguided notion that improvements in mood are simply a result of eating more nutritious foods. In reality, mood swings can diminish and mood can improve even before the new diet “sets in.” Sometimes within a matter of days.
That’s because what we eat matters at least as much as how much we eat. Foods are not just about calories or about nutrients. They also have hormonal and neurochemical properties.
Addressing those properties from the start and designing a program around them places the focus on health and mood changes instead of on calories. That can bring about improvements in health and mood right from the get-go.
“Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.” – Ernestine Umer
