Easy Survival Tips for Holiday Season Workouts
By Joan Kent, PhD

Here are 3 quick tips to help you keep your holiday season cardio workouts going strong.

Tip 1: Get It Done First!
Whichever type of cardio you like, do it FIRST thing in the morning – before you’ve had a chance to think about what else you need to do that day.

If you have access to equipment (say, a treadmill), get on it right away. After a 3- or 4-minute warm-up, just follow your usual workout plan. Or you can go for a walk or jog.

Once it’s over, move on with the rest of your day. Shower, eat, whatever – knowing that your workout is finished for the day.

Tip 2: Pull Doubles!

If you’re a ‘die-hard’ who wants to fit in a more serious workout, split the time. Cardio in the AM, strength and core in the PM, for instance.

This can be done at home, at the gym, or by combining the two. Do core training at home in the morning, then stop at the gym on your way home to fit in your cardio or your strength work.

Tip 3: Try a Better-Than-Nothing (BTN) Workout!

A BTN workout is meant to fit into a day with “no time” for any workout. You can carve out 10 minutes SOMEwhere during the day. Yes, you can.

Here’s the plan. Warm up for 3 minutes – 1 minute easy, 1 minute a little harder, 1 minute a little harder. Next, do 6 intervals. Each will take 1 minute. Then cool down for a minute.

Interval format #1 is 40-seconds of hard work, followed by 20 seconds of limited recovery. Repeat that 5 times, then cool down for the final minute.

Interval format #2 is 30 seconds of hard work, followed by 30 seconds of recovery. Repeat 5 more times, then cool down for the last minute.

Interval format #3 is a bit easier. It’s 20 seconds of hard work, followed by 40 seconds of recovery. Repeat 5 times, and cool down for the last minute.

Much research shows that short, hard intervals are better than longer cardio. Perfect – time-saving and effective!

These tips are practical and absolutely do-able. Give them a try and see how much better the whole season goes when your workouts are under control.
