Another Nutrition Mistake: Foods Are About Nutrients by Joan Kent, PhD
First, let me clearly acknowledge the importance of nutrients in foods. They matter!
That said, what I mean here is it’s a mistake to think the importance of nutrition is limited to the nutrients that foods contain.
Foods do much more than just provide nutrients. Here are 4 ways foods show their powers:
- Foods can keep us alert and working productively during the day.
Eat protein foods throughout the day for this effect.
“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” ― Virginia Woolf
- Foods can help us relax and unwind at the end of the day.
Eat starch about 80 to 90 minutes before bedtime.
- Foods can affect our appetite, positively or negatively.
Avoid sugary foods to help you avoid unwanted increases in appetite and out-of-control eating.
“Do you know what breakfast cereal is made of? It’s made of all those little curly wooden shavings you find in pencil sharpeners!” ― Roald Dahl
- Foods can affect our moods, positively or negatively.
Again, eat protein foods throughout the day for the positive effect and avoid sugar to prevent the negative effect.
“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.” ― Oscar Wilde

“You can’t just eat good food. You’ve got to talk about it too. And you’ve got to talk about it (with) somebody who understands that kind of food.” ― Kurt Vonnegut
