How Can Life’s Inconveniences Work for You? by Joan Kent, PhD
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” — Epictetus
I can’t deny it made me feel a little bit proud. That day, I had no car available but needed to get to work.
What was I to do? The solution was simple.
I packed everything I needed for the day, including my most important purse items, in a backpack. It was good and heavy.
I then walked to work quickly. It took 45 minutes to get there, and I arrived dripping with sweat and out of breath.
Because I’ve always enjoyed workouts, I allowed myself to feel the glow of the endorphins (beta-endorphin), and let that glow set the tone for my day. At work, I changed into the dry clothes I had packed.
I felt fantastic — and grateful for my fitness — and enjoyed my full day of work all day long.
Could It Have Gone a Different Way?
Interestingly, only a day later, an acquaintance told me about something he had gone through earlier in the day. It was essentially the same thing that had happened to me. He angrily complained about the inconvenience he had suffered.
No doubt I should have kept my mouth shut, but — young and dumb as I was — I told him my story from the day before. With a big smile. Emphasis on the part about what a good workout it had been.
Okay, if it happened now, I’d keep it to myself, but, at the time, I had felt great about it. He looked a little embarrassed about his story, but maybe that prompted him to do things differently next time. Or maybe not.
