Are You Afraid to Change Your Diet?

by Joan Kent, PhD

Fear of nutrition change is surprisingly common. In fact, some folks won’t even start working with me because they’ve decided they know what I’m going to tell them – and aren’t ready to do it.

They’re often wrong about what I would tell them.

When I first started out as a nutritionist, I wanted my clients to do everything perfectly from day 1. I later realized how overwhelming that felt for many people.

Now I focus on making things easy – sometimes just changing structure. For example, eat within 30 minutes of waking up, eat 4 to 5 hours later, and again 4 to 5 hours after that.

The next step is usually to add healthful foods in, not take things away. No fear!

If you’ve been reluctant to change your food, start by structuring your day’s food as suggested above. Do it for a week.

Next, eat something good for you at every meal. If you decide to eat junk, eat the healthy food first.

Do that for a week and see how you feel. You may be surprised. And you may feel ready for the next step.
