5 Nutrition Worsts: #3. The Worst Lie by Joan Kent, PhD
So what’s next in our list of Nutrition Worsts?
Today’s is The Worst Lie.
Yes, the sugar industry’s lies about fats definitely qualify for this category. But let’s go back a bit further in food history to what started it all – the Margarine Lie. After all, Big Sugar had a hand in this and used it to get its other lies started.
Margarine was designed to replace butter, which contains saturated fat. But sat fats are absolutely NOT as bad as we were told. That was part of the sugar industry’s manipulations.
Also, butter contains a healthful fat called lauric acid — which happens to be a key healthful fat in coconut oil.
Margarine contains far worse fats than butter — trans fats. Those increase serum cholesterol and can cause blood vessel damage.
Margarine also contains potassium sorbate (a carcinogen), soy oil (tons of bad info about that), and artificial colors. The most commonly used food colorings (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6) are carcinogenic and contaminated with cancer-causing substances. They can also cause allergies or asthma; hyperactivity in children; and irritable bowel disease in mice.
My ‘Favorite’(!) Margarine Story
The definitive margarine story is about an informal experiment done at a school. They unwrapped a stick of margarine and left it outside on the window ledge for the entire school year.
And? Nothing happened to it!
Bugs didn’t eat it, birds didn’t eat it, mice didn’t eat it, mold didn’t grow on it. No life form would touch it.
Yet that was being promoted as food…. And better than butter. Right.
Amazingly enough, some people still use margarine, but the best practice is to stay away. Completely.
Instead, use grass-fed butter or raw coconut oil. Your body and your health will benefit.
