3 Ways Tariffs Could Tear Down Your Mood – and What to Do NOW to Prevent It

By Joan Kent, PhD

  1. Panic

Worries about what’s happening in the stock market. Frustrations about how your financial plans are being derailed (or worse). Fearing you’ll never get back on track.

  1. Depression

Watching things happen around you and having no control over them can take away your sense of well-being and bring on a definite downswing in your moods. It’s a secondary reaction, but completely real.

  1. Anger

This can be a result of the two above. Again, loss of control over what’s happening in your own financial affairs can play havoc with moods and lead to another secondary reaction:  anger.

What Can You Do Now to Prevent a Mood ‘Collapse’?

Don’t let your reactions to tariffs send you running to the kitchen (or elsewhere) for a junk food binge. Those foods will only make moods and mood-swings worse.

Instead:

  • Avoid sugar.
  • Limit – or avoid – alcohol.
  • Eat plenty of vegetables.
  • Eat plenty of protein.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Keep up with your workouts.

Create your own cocoon when things feel out of control or trigger your frustrations. Do that by focusing on your own internal state. You can handle outside “craziness” much better if you keep your mental state stable. The tips above are simple, but they do work and can definitely help!
